Mathare Youth Talented Organization

Miss Kogalo

The Miss Kogalo Initiative (MKI) is born out of an idea of including beauty in sports to reduce the "masculinity" of the industry and create a platform to raise awareness about hooliganism, talents going unexplored among less privileged communities as well as gender issues. The aim is to create healthy competition among different registered football fun groups from different clubs across the country through beauty pageants programmes, talent shows and various design exhibitions.

MKI seeks to open opportunities for less privileged communities, namely in the slums around Nairobi. This event will also create an occasion to involve the general public, raise awareness about life in the slums and attract supporters in order to improve skills, knowledge and increase income-generating capacities.

Project activities

In the upcoming weeks we will be going around informal settlements in Nairobi to recruit models who could run for the Miss Kogalo title. This recruitment process will also serve as a way to involve interest people and start raising awareness on the issues we want to tackle. The election will happen in three phases along this year, with phase I happening in April or May. We are currently looking for partners to organise the event. We are also developing a training package for the beauty pageants to train young aspiring models.
